Who we are

Eatreka is a personal cuisine ledger: you log restaurant meals, and each entry records which country's cuisine you ate. It is run by an individual, not a company. For any privacy question or request, contact privacy@eatreka.com.

What we collect

Account details. Your email address, and the display name and username you choose. Authentication is handled by Clerk; if you sign in with Google, Clerk receives your Google account email and basic profile.

What you log. Your entries — the country whose cuisine you ate, the restaurant, visit date, star rating, any notes, tags, photos, and companions you record. Notes are private to you and are never shown on a public profile.

Restaurant and location data. When you search for a restaurant, your search text is sent to Google's Places API. If you allow location access, your approximate coordinates are sent with the search to prioritise nearby results. We store the restaurant details Google returns (name, address, coordinates); we do not store your own location.

Photos. Images you attach to entries, stored in Amazon S3 and served via CloudFront. Photos are compressed in your browser before upload, which strips embedded metadata such as GPS coordinates, keeping only the orientation needed to display them correctly.

Notifications. If you enable them, a push subscription identifying your browser or device, so notifications can be delivered.

Technical data. When something goes wrong, Sentry receives an error report which may include your browser type, the page you were on, and an identifier for your session.

Why we use it, and our legal basis

To run the app — storing and displaying your entries, computing your statistics and achievements, and showing you the map. Legal basis: performance of a contract with you.

To keep it working — error monitoring, and rate limiting to prevent abuse. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in a functioning, non-abused service.

Optional extras you switch on — a public profile, notifications, or the weekly suggestion nudge. Legal basis: your consent, withdrawable at any time in Settings.

We do not sell your data, and we do not use it for advertising or profiling.

Who else processes it

These providers process data on our behalf to run the service: Clerk (authentication), Neon (database hosting, EU region), Amazon Web Services (photo storage and delivery, EU London/Ireland), Vercel (application hosting), Google Maps Platform (restaurant search and maps), Upstash (rate limiting), and Sentry (error monitoring). Some are based in the United States; transfers rely on Standard Contractual Clauses or an equivalent safeguard.

What other people can see

Your entries are private by default. Nothing you log is visible to anyone else unless you deliberately turn it on:

If you make your profile public, anyone with the link can see your display name, username, statistics, achievements, and your ten most recent entries. Photos appear only if you also leave the photo setting on. Your notes are never shown, on any profile, ever.

If you generate a wishlist share link, anyone holding that link can see the saved restaurants on it.

If you tag another Eatreka account as a companion, they are told that you tagged them — but they are shown nothing about the entry itself.

Cookies and similar technologies

We use cookies that are strictly necessary for signing in and keeping you signed in (set by Clerk). Your theme preference and consent choice are stored in your browser's local storage. Entries you create offline are held in your browser's IndexedDB until they sync. We do not currently use advertising or analytics cookies.

How long we keep it

Your entries are kept until you delete them or delete your account. Deleting your account removes your entries, photos, achievements, notifications and settings permanently. Photos are deleted from storage when you delete the entry or your account.

Your rights

If you are in the UK or EU you have rights under UK GDPR/GDPR — access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, and objection. We honour equivalent requests wherever you live.

Most are self-service: edit or delete any entry at any time; correct your name and username in Settings; export everything you have with Settings → Your data → Export; and delete your account and all its data from the account menu. For anything else, email privacy@eatreka.com.

If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk) or your local supervisory authority.

Children

Eatreka is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data. If you believe a child has created an account, email us and we will remove it.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that materially affects you, we will say so in the app before the change takes effect.
